Welcome to Chili Bar Slate, the oldest active mine in California! Chili Bar is located at the site of the largest slate deposit in the Western United States. We are renowned as the preeminent source of beautiful black slate in California, Nevada, and Arizona. You can learn more about our products here.

The recorded history of the area goes back to beginning of the California Gold Rush. Early settlers first discovered the area when they moved upstream from Coloma looking for gold. Included in these early argonauts were Chilean miners who made the area their home as they hoped to strike it rich. Now you know why it is called Chili Bar, but we will leave it up to you to decide why it’s Chili Bar, not Chile Bar! If you are curious to read more about us, click here.

This blog will be updated regularly with info from the quarry for the benefit of our customers. Although we sell our slate in bulk and generally don’t sell directly to the public, we are happy to get you set-up with one of our distributors so that you can get some stunning black slate in your own backyard.
